Indoor Outdoor Living
Located on a corner lot, the views into this garden are visible on three sides of the property. The challenge was to use every possible inch of land to create usable courtyard rooms while maintaining curb appeal for the neighborhood and privacy for the homeowner.
The Beginning. Many years ago we were asked to enhance a small courtyard garden that was a sanctuary for a very busy professional. The brick courtyard walls were softened with ivy and the soothing sound of water permeated the outdoor space. Planters of tropicals and annuals gave a big punch of color. Although very private, the small area and tall walls of the courtyard excluded enjoyment of rest of the landscape.
The Landscape Design Solution:New Dream Home
Front Courtyard. A few years later we were asked to design a front courtyard. It consists of a small brick patio for seating and natural stone and brick pillars that match the homes exterior. We designed the custom ornamental iron gates and fencing between the pillars. A small area of grass was retained to keep and open feel and safe place for the puppy to play. New planting beds compliment the hardscape and planters were specifically placed to bring in bright color.
Making Every Inch Count
Most recently our client wanted to add an entry to the rear landscape and a second courtyard was created. Enclosed with the same natural stone and brick pillars and ornamental gates and fencing the steps, paths and patios were kept to generous proportions to help the garden avoid a cramped feel. A grass area inside the courtyard is a major part of the design allowing a place to play for the cutest little puppies. Enhancing the inlay brick patio is a formal fountain and colorful planters. A walk through barrel pergola structure retains order and allows easy circulation from one garden to another. A flagstone path leads you to a decorative bench and guides you through the landscape. Spotlight plantings provide privacy, drive-by color and seasonal interest and the spacious planting beds are broken up with deliberately placed grass areas.
